They should have bought oil futures

Lets see...... Last summer and fall all we heard about was the massive Michigan deficit that Democrats and Republicans couldn't agree on how to fix. Then, amazingly, our brilliant politicians found a $350 million budget surplus at the end of the year. On May 9th three of our Michigan representatives ( including our own Jack Hoogendyk) announce that they want to give Michiganders a break from high gas prices by suspending the states 6 percent sales tax from Memorial day to Labor day. When asked how the state would deal with the lost revenue, Mr. Hoogendyk said it would be covered by the $350 million dollar surplus. Now, the Senate Fiscal Agency announced on May 14 that Michigan is facing a $300 million deficit starting Oct. 1st.
These people really need to talk to each other now and then.

Wanna bet?

The Bushes wanted a low profile wedding in Texas for their daughter. Thats because the divorce in two years will be high profile enough.

Now we know

Lets review. Three years ago five school districts asked for a three year temporary tax increase just to help them get past some rough times. Now, instead of learning to conduct their budgets more efficiently, they decided they liked the extra cash coming in and this week 57 % of us voted to let them keep it even though they have no specific use for it. They lied to get it in the first place and we rewarded them for it. Now we know what percent of us ain't to bright.

Say what?

General Motors Corp. boosted CEO Rick Wagoner's total compensation by 40 percent to $14.4 million in 2007, and now they announce they lost $3.3 billion in the first quarter of 2008.
Now, I really don't care. I don't have GM stock or buy their cars. But that just strikes me as insane to give a guy a 40% raise for blowing $3 billion.

Screw up? Move up!

Bush is promoting his top Iraq commander, Army Gen. David Petraeus. This makes perfect sense in light of all the other Cheney/Bush decisions. Iraq is still the same sinking hell hole it was when Patraeus took charge a year ago so its only natural to reward him for outstanding mediocrity.
You may remember that as National Security Adviser, Condoleeza Rice was given numerous warnings that Osama Bin Laden was going to attack the United States months before 9/11. She did nothing and was promoted to Secretary of State to reward her incompetence.

3,500 jobs

While the announcement by MPI Research of their plans for expansion and the addition of 3,500 jobs over the next five years is great news, I am wary. Very little is being mentioned about the massive tax breaks being given to MPI or if those tax breaks are conditional against the promised jobs. We've heard this before. About five years ago Pfizer was given some major tax breaks by Portage and Kalamazoo with the promise that Pfizer would maintain certain employment levels. They didn't, and as far as I know they haven't lost those tax breaks.
